Press release on consultations between Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and US Under Secretary of State Thomas Shannon on bilateral matters
On September 11, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov held consultations in Helsinki with US Under Secretary of State Thomas Shannon on acute issues concerning bilateral relations.
They focused on the forced closure of the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco by the US authorities and the illegitimate seizure of our diplomatic property in that city and also in Washington, which earlier happened with two suburban residential buildings used by Russian institutions in the United States. These moves, including the searches that US special services conducted, under the threat of using force, at premises that have immunity, are a gross violation of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, and the Bilateral Consular Convention. Simultaneously, Russian diplomats’ freedom of movement and travel has been also significantly restricted.
In this regard, Russia has protested again over the hostile actions carried out by the United States and its encroachment on diplomatic immunity. It was indicated that the conditions for the American diplomats’ stay in Russia were being brought in line with the restrictions imposed on our representatives.
Washington’s other unacceptable actions were also touched upon, including the increased frequency of arrests of Russian citizens by US intelligence agencies in third countries.
Russia called for an end to actions that are destroying Russian-American relations and undermining international law, which is fraught with grave consequences, and for starting to seek solutions to the problems that have piled up through no fault of our own.
