Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at talks with Foreign Minister of Cyprus Ioannis Kasoulides, Nicosia, May 18, 2017
Thank you, Mr Kasoulides.
I am happy to be in your hospitable country again. Our close historical ties are based on the spiritual closeness of our peoples.
In this difficult period, we appreciate the position of Cyprus, which has not yielded to Russia-hating sentiments that are being forced on the European Union, and has called for ending this abnormal period in the EU-Russia relations.
Relations between Russia and Cyprus are growing stronger in absolutely all areas, including political dialogue, trade, economic and investment cooperation, inter-parliamentary ties, and cultural and humanitarian relations. We hope to be able to discuss the entire range of bilateral issues today and also the goals that have been set by our leaders. We will be glad to listen to your views on the state of affairs in the negotiations for a Cypriot settlement. Our position is well known: a settlement must be based on UN Security Council resolutions and agreements reached between the two Cypriot communities.
I wholeheartedly congratulate you on the successful Cyprus Chairmanship of the Council of Europe, which ends tomorrow. The number and the high level of the events you have organised are impressive indeed.
Once again, thank you for your hospitality.
