Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov’s meeting with candidate for WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom
On April 19, Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov met at the Russian Foreign Ministry with Tedros Adhanom, former health minister of Ethiopia and currently a candidate for the post of Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Mr Gatilov and Mr Adhanom noted the high level of cooperation between Russia and the WHO in the main areas of this specialised UN agency’s activity.
Mr Adhanom presented the main elements of his campaign programme, with emphasis on the prospects for strengthening international cooperation in the healthcare sector.
The current WHO director-general, Margaret Chan, has headed the organisation since 2007. Her second term ends this year. A new director-general will be elected in May 2017.
