Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida

On February 17, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of the G20 foreign minister's meeting in Bonn.

The ministers discussed a wide range of issues on the bilateral agenda with a focus on the practical implementation of the agreements reached by the two countries’ leaders during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Japan in December 2016.

An agreement was reached to hold consultations in the 2+2 format (foreign and defence ministers) in Tokyo on March 20 this year. The ministers also confirmed that a new round of the strategic dialogue at the level of the first deputy foreign ministers would be held in Tokyo on March 30. Talks between the two countries’ deputy foreign ministers on measures to facilitate joint economic activities on the southern Kuril Islands are scheduled for March 18.   

The ministers exchanged views on current global issues, including the maintenance of peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
