Comment by the Information and Press Department on the terrorist attacks in Baghdad
Car bomb explosions in Sadr City in the north of Baghdad, Iraq, and the al-Bayaa district in the south killed 56 and wounded over 80 civilians, including women and children, on February 15 and 16. ISIS, which has increased its terrorist activities considerably since the government forces occupied eastern Mosul, has claimed responsibility for these heinous crimes.
We express our deepest condolences to the families of the dead and wishes of an early recovery to the wounded.
We strongly condemn these terrorist attacks, which have again revealed the barbarous nature of militant radicalism and its pseudo-religious banners. We point out again that these criminal actions are staged to fan religious strife in Iraq and undermine the efforts to promote national accord in this long suffering country.
Moscow expresses solidarity with the friendly Iraqi leadership and people’s struggle against the extremists. We have been consistent in supporting and providing practical assistance to the anti-terrorist efforts of the Iraqi authorities. At the same time, we yet again urge our international and regional partners to consolidate their efforts to fight the terrorist threat wherever it may come from.
