Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's meeting with Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organisation Executive Committee
On January 13, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov received Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, who arrived in Moscow on a working visit.
In the course of the conversation, the Palestine-Israel peace process was discussed in detail, including in view of Russian efforts to help restore Palestinian national unity on the PLO platform.
The Russian side reiterated its call to resume Palestine-Israel negotiations as soon as possible on the generally recognised international legal basis on all issues regarding the final status of the Palestinian territories. To that end, Russia will work to create the conditions for a sustainable dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis via bilateral channels as well as at various international venues, including the Middle East Quartet of international mediators.
On the same day, expanded consultations were held with Saeb Erekat that included Mikhail Bogdanov, Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa, and Sergey Vershinin, the Russian Foreign Minister’s Special Representative on the Middle East Settlement and Director of the Department of the Middle East and North Africa of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
