Comment by the Information and Press Department following the attack on Committee Against Torture Joint Mobile Group representatives
On March 9, unidentified men attacked a minibus carrying representatives of the Joint Mobile Group of the Committee Against Torture, a Russian interregional NGO. The passengers included foreign nationals, Maria Persson Lofgren, who works for Swedish Radio and is accredited in Russia, and Norwegian reporter Öystein Windstad of the Oslo daily Ny Tid, who is not accredited with the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department. After the attack, which occurred in the Sunzhensky district on the Chechnya-Ingushetia border, the victims of the attack were hospitalised.
According to reports from Russian competent authorities, they are considering initiating a criminal case on charges under Art. 167 of the Russian Criminal Code (intentional destruction or damage of property) and Art. 213 (hooliganism), and have launched a manhunt for the attackers.
Like any illegal action against citizens, we condemn the attack on NGO representatives and reporters and express our sympathy for those injured.
We hope that those guilty will be identified and held accountable.
