Press release on Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Khaled Khoja, President of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces
On August 13, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Khaled Khoja, President of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces.
The sides exchanged opinions on Syrian developments and emphasised that there was no alternative to a political settlement of the national crisis based on the provisions of the Geneva Communique of June 30, 2012. They focused on prospects for the inter-Syrian negotiating process, which aims to meet the aspirations of the Syrian people for a united, sovereign and secular Syria that would guarantee the rights of all ethnic and religious groups.
Mr Lavrov urged the leaders of the National Coalition to become actively involved in a meeting of representatives of a wide range of Syrian opposition groups in order to draft a constructive collective platform for launching dialogue with the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic.
That same day, the Russian Foreign Ministry hosted in-depth consultations between Mr Khoja, his delegation and the Russian President’s Special Representative for the Middle East and African Countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
