On August 13, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke over the phone with US Secretary of State John Kerry, at the latter’s initiative.

The conversation focused on the situation in Ukraine. Sergey Lavrov restated the need for the real implementation of the Minsk Agreements by the Kiev authorities, the end of armed provocations, and the launch of a direct dialogue between Kiev and Donbass. The two officials agreed to continue working with both sides in the interests of a peaceful settlement.

They also discussed ways of overcoming the internal conflict in Syria, including chances of persuading a broad range of representatives of the Syrian opposition to sit down at a common table in order to prepare for a UN-sponsored dialogue with Damascus on how to implement the Geneva Communique of June 30, 2012. The conversation also touched upon the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which was coordinated with Iran and approved by the UN Security Council.

A number of issues of bilateral Russian-US relations were discussed as well.
