Press release on Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov’s meeting with UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy
On September 27, Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Mikhail Bogdanov met with UN Deputy Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, who is in Moscow on a working visit.
The parties exchanged views on the situation in Syria and prospects for advancing a political settlement in the country on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. They noted that the results of the sixth round of the international talks on Syria in Astana on September 14 and 15, which finalised the creation of four de-escalation zones in Syria, are creating conditions conducive to intra-Syrian contacts in Geneva under the auspices of the UN, and ensuring that they are inclusive, as well as to increased humanitarian assistance for the population of Syria. The parties confirmed that they share the understanding that the Astana talks are not a substitute for the political negotiation process in Geneva, but they rather supplement and support it.
In this context, special attention was paid to preparations for the next UN-led stage of intra-Syrian consultations in Geneva and the possibility of switching them to the format of direct intra-Syrian talks between the delegation of the Syrian Government and the Syrian opposition delegation.
