PRESS RELEASE

Immediately after the terrorist acts in New York and Washington, on September 11 Russia together with France, which currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council, initiated the adoption of a statement of the Council President. In this document there found reflection the assessments made by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in connection with these tragic events.

Security Council members strongly condemned the horrifying terrorist acts, regarding them as a common tragedy and a challenge to all mankind. They stressed that there could not be any justification either for these or any other terrorist actions, and that all states must jointly work to bring the perpetrators and organizers of these atrocities to justice. The task of preventing and suppressing terrorist acts through greater multilateral cooperation and full implementation of all the antiterrorist conventions and the relevant Security Council resolutions on the fight against terrorism was reaffirmed.

Security Council members expressed readiness to take further urgent steps in accordance with the UN Charter in connection with the crimes of terrorists in the USA.

Russia considers it important to pass a special resolution against terrorism in the spirit of the Security Council assessments at the 56th session of the UN General Assembly, which is opening today.
