Comment by the Information and Press Department on the press release on the results of Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks’ visit to Ukraine
We have attentively read a press release on the results of Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muižnieks’ trip to Ukraine and his visit to Donbass on March 21-25, posted on the Council of Europe website.
In the press release, the Commissioner notes numerous serious human rights violations in Ukraine, including murders, enforced disappearances, illegal arrests and mistreatment of arrested persons. We support the Commissioner’s call to the Ukrainian authorities that those found guilty of committing these crimes should be brought to account.
Mr Muižnieks also notes that the authorities in Kiev should put an end to the socioeconomic blockade of Donbass and resume the payment of pensions and social allowances in the region. We have long drawn the attention of Kiev and the international public to the fact that these pressure tactics with regard to the people of Ukraine are absolutely unacceptable.
We hope that the balanced and well thought-out report and recommendations will be issued following this trip, and that their implementation can positively influence the human rights situation in Ukraine.
