On August 6, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his counterparts from the ten member states as part of the annual ASEAN agenda of events in Manila, which also coincided with the group’s 50th anniversary. In his congratulatory message, President Vladimir Putin noted the growing prestige of the Association on the international arena, expressed support for the partners’ efforts to deepen regional integration and connectivity, and to ensure peace, security and stability in the APR.

The parties discussed the implementation of the agreements reached at the 2016 ASEAN-Russia Summit in Sochi to strengthen the dialogue partnership in areas such as politics and security, the economy, culture, and humanitarian ties. The ministers adopted a statement on combating international terrorism, endorsed a roadmap for the implementation of the recommendations of the ASEAN-Russia Eminent Persons Group and launched a new dialogue mechanism – an integrated network of expert centres.

The exchange of views on the international and regional agenda confirmed the coincidence or proximity of the sides’ positions on key issues, including the development of a comprehensive, balanced and equitable Asia-Pacific architecture for security and cooperation.

The participants expressed support for further development of the Association's relations with the SCO as part of the formation of a network of multilateral diplomacy reflecting the region’s polycentric structure.
