On March 29, a meeting of senior officials from Russia and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the level of deputy foreign ministers took place in Vientiane. Igor Morgulov headed the Russian delegation.

The participants reviewed progress in implementing decisions of the Russia – ASEAN Summit in Sochi (May 19-20, 2016) and bringing cooperation to the strategic partnership level. They proposed further practical steps to expand cooperation in trade, science, technology, transport, and food and energy security. They agreed to prepare joint celebrations on the occasion of ASEAN’s 50th anniversary in 2017.

The officials exchanged opinions on international and regional issues, which proved that Russia and ASEAN have similar views. They stressed the need to increase resistance to common challenges and threats, to continue the dialogue in building a new architecture of security and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region, and to consolidate coordination at multilateral venues in the region.

The next Russia-ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting will be held in Russia in 2018.
