Press release on ASEAN-Russia Ministerial Meeting
On July 25, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with the foreign ministers of ten ASEAN countries as part of the annual ASEAN high-level events in Vientiane, Laos.
The main item on the meeting’s agenda was a follow-up on the resolutions of the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit that took place in Sochi in May 2016 to mark the 20th anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia dialogue. Participants outlined specific political, economic and humanitarian initiatives aimed at upgrading ASEAN-Russia relations to a strategic partnership. Special attention was given to expanding substantive cooperation in a number of priority years, including trade and investment, energy, agriculture, science, education and emergency response.
The exchange of views on current international and regional issues, and efforts to counter common challenges and threats showed a fundamental convergence of approaches among the participants in the meeting. They agreed to step up cooperation within key multilateral platforms alongside efforts to build an equal and open security framework in Asia Pacific. The meeting also featured a discussion on the prospects for coordinating regional integration projects and arranging a comprehensive economic partnership across the Eurasian space.
