Meeting between the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, and the African Union’s Special Envoy for Western Sahara, Joaquim Alberto Chissano

On 8 September, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, had a meeting with the African Union's Special Envoy for Western Sahara, Joaquim Alberto Chissano, who was in Moscow.

There was an interested exchange of opinions on problems of the Western Sahara peace process. The need to continue searching for its long-term and mutually acceptable resolution within a political field within the framework of respective UN Security Council resolutions was underlined.

A range of topical issues on the international and regional agenda, including the growth of the terrorist threat, were also discussed. Special concerns were expressed with regard to the serious instability in the Sahara-Sahel region. Sergey Lavrov noted the importance and the initiative taken by the African Union in the peaceful resolution of many conflicts and crises in the African continent.

On the same day, Joaquim Alberto Chissano had consultations with Mikhail Bogdanov, Special Representative of the President for the Middle East and Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation.
