Born in 1949

1971: graduated from the Institute of Oriental Languages of Lomonosov Moscow State University

Fluent in English and French

Since 1972: held various diplomatic posts in the central office of the Foreign Ministry and abroad, notably in Senegal, Australia and the UK

1992-1993: Head of Directorate, Department of Africa and the Middle East

1993-1996: Director of the Information and Press Department

1996-2000: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

2000-2005: Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Since June 2005: Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

October 2005: appointed State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs

Holds the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary

Merited Worker of the Diplomatic Service of the Russian Federation

Awarded the Order For Service to the Fatherland IV class, the Order of St Alexander Nevsky, the Order of Friendship and several other national and departmental awards
