Russian MFA Information and Press Department Commentary Regarding Media Questions Concerning New Circumstances Around the “Litvinenko Case”
Question: How could you comment on reports of Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service having brought charges against Russian citizen Andrei Lugovoy in the “Litvinenko case” and his possible extradition to Britain?
Commentary: As of now, we have received from the British authorities only the most general information on this case. We expect the British side to soon provide more detailed information via channels of interaction between our law enforcement agencies. We have repeatedly declared our readiness to cooperate with British colleagues in a thorough investigation of this case, and we are interested in an objective and unbiased clarification of all the circumstances.
As to handover, it is well known that extradition of Russian citizens to foreign states contradicts the Constitution of the Russian Federation. Similar provisions also exist in the legislation of other states.
