PRESS RELEASE
UN Security Council Adds Caucasus Emirate Terrorist Organization to Al-Qaida Sanctions List
1183-02-08-2011
The UN Security Council 1267/1989 Committee monitoring sanctions against Al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities on July 28 adopted a decision to add the Caucasus Emirate (Imarat Kavkaz) to its consolidated list – the terrorist organization controlled by international terrorist Doku Umarov (included in the sanctions list of the Committee in March this year).
We welcome this step of the UN Security Council as a manifestation of the international community’s support of Russia’s attitude towards the terrorist elements operating in the North Caucasus region and as an understanding of the need to jointly address the threat of terrorism which does not recognize borders or nationalities.
In practical terms, pursuant to this decision, UN member states must immediately impose on the Caucasus Emirate a regime of sanctions envisaging the freezing of all its financial assets and the termination of any assistance, including arms sales, economic resources and so on.
The sanctions measures also apply to the official information organ of the Caucasus Emirate, the Internet resource Kavkaz Center, the main Internet provider of which is located in Stockholm (Sweden).
For our part, we are ready to further contribute to building collaborative efforts to strengthen counter-terrorism security under UN auspices.
