STATEMENT BY ALEXANDER YAKOVENKO, THE OFFICIAL SPOKESMAN OF RUSSIA'S MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Regarding the Outcomes of the Inter-Afghan Meeting in Bonn

2287-05-12-2

Moscow welcomes the outcomes of the meeting of the representatives of the leading political groups of Afghanistan, held in Bonn under the aegis of the UN. For the first time in many years Afghans at the negotiating table have agreed on the establishment of interim bodies of power, including an interim administration, with subsequent formation of an interim government and the convocation later of an all-Afghan legislative assembly - the Loya Jirga.

The Russian side assesses the Bonn meeting as a qualitatively important landmark on the road to a post-conflict dispensation in Afghanistan, that will enable that country to become a state free of terrorism and narcotics and living in harmony with its neighbors and the rest of the world. We express hope that both the participants of the inter-Afghan meeting and the international community as a whole will make efforts to ensure that the decisions taken in Bonn are consistently implemented.
