Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement for the press at a joint news conference following talks with Foreign Minister of Colombia María Ángela Holguín, Bogota, March 24, 2015

Madam Minister,

I’d like to thank you once again for your traditional hospitality and the warm atmosphere at our meetings and talks. We are grateful to President Juan Manuel Santos and to you for the highly constructive talks.

I’d like to begin this statement with an expression of our condolences on the death of Colombian citizens during a recent terrorist attack in Tunisia and the crash of a German plane.

During our talks today, we have reaffirmed the mutual striving of Colombia and Russia to deepen our relations, which began 80 years ago, if we count from the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries.

The focus on strengthening all-round cooperation was reaffirmed at a meeting between our Presidents in Brazil in July 2014. We have stated at our talks today that we have intensified our political dialogue and also efforts to find additional reserves for strengthening our trade and investment ties, acting in accordance with the agreements reached in 2014.   Full story Full Story

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement and answer to a reporter’s question following his visit to Havana, Cuba, March 24, 2015

During the visit to Havana, talks were held with President of the Council of State and of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro, Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Co-chair of the Intergovernmental Russian-Cuban Commission on Trade, Economic and Scientific and Technical Cooperation Ricardo Cabrisas Ruíz and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.

Particular attention was devoted to the discussion of the entire range of our relations, especially considering that May 8 is the 55th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between our countries.

The goals that we are facing today were formulated during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Cuba in July 2014. We reviewed in detail the progress of their implementation in trade, the economy, humanitarian and cultural spheres, and naturally, in the sphere of political dialogue.

Our priority is the preparation of a meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian-Cuban Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, which will take place on April 22 in Kazan. Considering the instructions issued by our heads of state, there is every reason to believe that our countries’ agencies will prepare wide-ranging, serious and forward-looking projects in the energy sector, transport and civil infrastructure, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare and civil aviation.   Full story Full Story

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with Sergey Brilyov, Vesti v Subbotu, on TV channel Rossiya 1, March 21, 2015

Question: There is a lot happening these days. Let’s start with something pleasant. You were in New York three weeks ago and next week you are going to Cuba, Guatemala, Colombia, and other countries. Do your aides count how many times a year you visit the western, eastern, northern and southern hemispheres?

Sergey Lavrov: They do, but they usually tell me the figure at the end of the year. I don’t remember how many trips I made and how many kilometres I covered in 2014. The figure is sizeable, but not a record. US Secretary of State John Kerry and I were talking about this and compared figures. His is larger.

Question: How do you endure this strenuous activity?

Sergey Lavrov: I don’t know. It’s interesting, because I’m not going as a tourist, but on business. You can use the time on the plane to prepare for visits or negotiations, which takes time. You need to talk with partners, and the means of transportation are becoming increasingly better. So I don’t think it’s a health risk.  Full story Full Story
