Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks and answers to media questions at a joint news conference following talks with Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn, Moscow, July 3, 2015

Ladies and gentlemen,

We have held useful and constructive talks in keeping with the way our dialogue with Luxembourg has always been.

Luxembourg is our longtime partner and a major foreign investor in Russia. We noted the ongoing interest of the business communities of both countries in deepening our cooperation. We welcome the active work of Luxembourg’s industry flagships, such as Paul Wurth in metallurgy, and Guardian Industries, on the Russian market. Recently, Accumalux Russia – a high-tech joint venture – was created in Togliatti. We agreed that we will promote and maintain the interests of our respective business communities in harmonising and implementing new projects.

We enjoy good cooperation in the financial sector.

The contacts between Luxembourg and Russia’s regions, first and foremost the Moscow and Kaluga regions, are expanding. We have good contacts in the sphere of research and education; a cultural exchange programme for the next three years is in the works and will soon be completed.

To our mutual regret, the overall relationship between Russia and the European Union and unilateral sanctions against Russia aren’t helpful for trade and economic ties. Trade between Russia and Luxembourg in January-April 2015 is down more than 30 percent. Exports from Luxembourg to Russia were hit hard. We want to stop these negative trends and to restore positive growth.  Full story Full Story

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s remarks and answers to questions at a meeting with participants of the BRICS Youth Summit, Moscow, July 2, 2015

Dear friends,

I am very pleased to see you at the Foreign Ministry during the first BRICS Youth Summit in Moscow.

BRICS is a young association built on innovative approaches and principles that reflect the needs of the time and comport with the current state of world development. The world is changing. A search is underway for the best forms for a polycentric arrangement of international relations, with several growth points and centres of gravity, representing different models of civilisation and development. These principles underlie BRICS’ formation and activities. Its goal is to create favourable conditions, first and foremost, for the comprehensive development of our countries and prosperity of our citizens.

Russia holds the Presidency of BRICS this year and has an extensive programme that was supported by each of the five countries. It aims to make as much concrete progress as possible in the areas that our presidents have identified as BRICS priorities. We are coordinating approaches and already carrying out joint projects in several areas. Our practical activities are entering an important new stage. We are completing preparations for launching BRICS financial institutions – the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement. We are about to adopt a long-term strategy for diversified economic partnership. In general, we are striving to expand the range of our cooperation.

Apart from having a practical and pragmatic agenda, BRICS has already become an influential factor in world politics and the global economy. The leaders of our association are going to meet in Ufa next week. We hope that the decisions adopted there will give fresh impetus to the development of BRICS as a key element of the current system of global governance.  Full story Full Story

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov answers questions from the media after talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Vienna, June 30, 2015

Question: What was the outcome of the talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry?

Sergey Lavrov: Talks with US Secretary of State John Kerry were held in line with agreements between President of Russia Vladimir Putin and US President Barack Obama, reached during their telephone conversation. The presidents agreed to focus on the growing terrorist threat in the Middle East and North Africa, primarily in the context of the Syrian crisis. Mr Kerry and I were instructed to meet and to discuss in detail the opportunities available for intensifying and coordinating the actions of regional countries in view of the increasingly aggressive attacks by the Islamic State, Jabhat al-Nusra and other terrorist organisations. Today, acting in the spirit of principled understandings reached by the two leaders, we exchanged concrete ideas on how to try to make the situation more manageable at the current stage and how to consolidate all those who view the Islamic State as the ultimate evil and who are sincerely interested in eradicating terrorism in this key region of the world.  Full story Full Story
