Visit to Russia by the Brazilian Foreign Minister Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado

On 19th-20th November the Brazilian Foreign Minister Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado made an official visit to the Russian Federation.

During the negotiations between the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Brazilian colleague, which were characterised by the kind of openness and trust recognised in the strategic partnership relations between our countries, the state and prospects concerning cooperation between Russia and Brazil were discussed. They analysed the course of the implementation of the agreements established during the summit that took place during the official visit of the President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff to Moscow in December 2012. The ministers discussed the schedule of forthcoming political contacts.

The negotiations focussed on issues concerning the strengthening of partner interaction between our countries on the international stage – in the UN, G20, BRICS, and WTO. Another item of the agenda was the preparation for the VI BRICS summit in Brazil in the first half of 2014.

The following international topical issues were reviewed: mutual actions to strengthen the central role of the UN in global affairs, issues related to multilateral diplomacy, the rule of international law, advancements in disarmament and non-proliferation, the reform of global credit and financial institutions, and the enforcement of international information security.

In the second half of 20th November Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado delivered a lecture about Brazil’s course of foreign policy in the Diplomatic Academy and visited an exhibition of documents dedicated to 185 years of diplomatic relations between Russia and Brazil.
