2240-11-11-2013

On the 13-14 November Russian foreign and defence ministers Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Shoigu will make a work-related visit to Cairo. They will conduct individual negotiations, as well as a meeting in the 2+2 format with the First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Military Production of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Fahmy.

A visit in such format is the first in the history of Russian-Egyptian relations and confirms the priority attention, which Russia attaches to the tasks of further development and strengthening of our links with friendly Egypt.

During the forthcoming visit Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Shoigu plan to discuss key aspects of the regional and international agendas with the emphasis on the current situation in countries of the Middle East and North Africa, with their Egyptian colleagues. Issues of strengthening the entire spectrum of Russian-Egyptian cooperation, including in the political, military, technical, economic and other areas will also be discussed.

The visit to Cairo takes place at very important time for the country. It is a time, when a whole set of steps are being made to advance the political process, which should ensure sustainable functioning of state authorities on the basis of the necessary enforcement of fundamental rights and liberties of the nationals of this country, the interests of all the strata and religions. Moscow is confident that the Egyptians have the ability to determine their future independently and without external interference, through a nation-wide dialogue.

Egypt is one of Russia’s leading partners in the Middle East, in the Arab world and on the African continent in general. Our countries are closely linked by traditional relations of friendship and mutual respect, perennial cooperation in different areas based on true respect of each other’s interests. We are truly interested in a stable and consistently developing Egypt, its active and positive role in international and regional affairs. With this in view, in the course of the visit they plan to discuss and pinpoint the main avenues of mutual work on the further development of foreign policy interaction, and the dynamic advancement of the entire complex of bilateral links.
